Belham Primary School
Brand development

Embracing limitations to create a distinctive brand.

The brief:
In 2013 Dulwich Hamlet Academy Trust was approached by Southwark Council with a proposal to open a new school, providing much-needed new primary places. The Trust’s existing school in Dulwich Village, Dulwich Hamlet Junior School, has a reputation for educational excellence and the new school, The Belham Primary School, Peckham, would bring this to a new community.

With a need for community consultation documents, a prospectus, website and application forms to be created before the school was opened, the challenge was that, although the vision for the school was firmly in place, the finished building, staff and, of course, the all important children were not.

The solution:
Working with illustrator Sam Bristol-Bell, Mirrorsmith developed a distinctive illustration style which captured the creativity at the core of The Belham’s curriculum. The distinctive location of the school was reflected in the theming of the illustrations. Sharp typography and tactile papers brought a warm, friendly feel to the school’s marketing materials.

As the school started its life, the illustrations could simply be added to and recoloured to reflect uniform choices and the school’s location.

  • The results

A suite of materials which engages the local community, builds awareness and prompts them to want to know more

A collection of illustrations which can be used for the school for a wide range of marketing requirements

    A colourful, vibrant, distinctive brand
