Ark Priory Primary Academy
Stairwell and reception makeover

Immersive learning with walls of inspiration.

The brief:
Mirrorsmith was briefed with transforming Ark Priory Primary Academy’s stairwells into inspirational spaces which support the school’s science and history curriculum. The school team hoped to bring a greater visual impact to the reception area to welcome everyone arriving at school and share the school’s vision, values and ethos.

The solution:
Using a combination of hand-drawn illustration, photography of historical figures and facts, the stairwell walls are now vibrant, engaging spaces which support classroom work. As children climb the stairs, they are transported through a timeline of colourful history. A second stairwell shares inspirational facts on animals, forces, the water cycle, space and the seasons. Friendly Ark Priory children illustrations are woven into the designs making the graphics unique to the school and relatable for the pupils.

The walls of the entrance hall are lighter and brighter with a landscape of values’ flags and the school’s ethos is structured and simplified into a circular ‘Ark Priory Child’ wheel, with icons to make each value memorable for all.

  • The results

A stairwell which transports children from the Stone Age to Alan Turing, directly supporting in-class work.

Darwin, Dame Jane Goodall and da Vinci bring learning to life in the science stairwells.

Friendly characters, subject-themed illustration and fresh colours communicate the school's mission and values across walls.
